About the Client

AutoCoach is an application designed for the Shepherd Center, a client who specializes in rehabilitation and education for patients with spinal cord injuries. They sponsored the design and development of an application, which we named “AutoCoach” in order to provide parents of driving teens with a resource to teach them how to drive safely.

While working as a visual design consultant, my CX team and I were fortunate enough to be assigned to this rewarding project. We were in the unique position of creating this application idea from the ground up—Meaning, we would name, brand, design, and develop this application.

The Ask

We were tasked with developing an application that would provide lessons on safe driving practice and instructions, a drive recording feature, and a driving log that could be submitted for a part of the driver’s license application process to any given state in the US.

The Method

Before we started on the UI, we took to the whiteboard to start drawing the user journey of our application. We surmised that the best experience for users would be separating the focus of the app into a “drive log” portion and an “education portion” would best help users get to the features they primarily use. We based this on the idea that some users will want to just practice and learn with the education models and others would want to just use the drive tracking and logging. However both types of users will need access to log itself to complete drivers license requirements.

Working with the client, we wireframed some ideas for the layout of these features, which they immediately approved! They agreed with our approach and supplied us with the brand guide for Shepherd Center to help inform the look and feel of not just the app, but also the branding of the app which they also leaned on us for!

The Result

With the user experience approved by the client, we were able to work on developing the branding for AutoCoach that matched the Shepherd Center in both name and visuals. I have a deep love and experience for creating logos and brand guides from my undergrad degree in Advertising, so I asked to take the lead for the branding effort. I pitched the idea of the speedometer to evoke being behind the wheel of a car and the name of “AutoCoach”. I did my research to make sure there were no other products on the market with that name and once I reviewed my logo design with my CD and the client, it was approved for use.

After the final approval, AutoCoach launched in the iOS app store with great success! . With straight forward UI and branding, this app has successfully taught many new drivers how to safely navigate driving. This app includes a drive tracking feature, complete with a digital driving log, step by step lessons plans, and advice for parents teaching their teen. You can check it out for yourself in the Play Store and the App Store.
